This planned amphitheatre at the UBC Botanical Garden will be a flexible space able to support a variety of programs including formal events such as weddings, concerts and performances and also informal uses such as teaching classes or simply eating lunch. The over-arching concept is that of a "garden in the theatre", a performance space that celebrates its unique setting integrated seamlessly into the garden. In keeping with the idea of 'garden in the theatre' trees are placed withing the seating area to connect the theatre with the surrounding plant collection.
The stage area is embraced by a curving rammed earth wall, a material selected for its unique ability to blend into the existing rock of the surrounding alpine garden. As part of this project, renowned British artis William Pye has been contracted to design a water sculpture to be sited at the entrance to the theatre, ensuring that when no performance is in progress, the space remains engaging.
