This pedestrian/cyclist bridge features a continuously curving deck that gradually rises up at a 5% slope from the west side heritage landscape, widens out at centre span over the canal to provide a lookout zone, and comes down in a switchback ramp/stair configuration in the existing east side landscaped median. The concept was developed through a rigorous process including presentations to NCC Design Review Panel and extensive public/stakeholder consultation.
The design attempts to maximize lightness and transparency, in order to touch the heritage context as gently as possible. The deck edge is expressed as a clean white ”ribbon” with substructure recessed back in the shadow. The fine-scaled aluminum railing lends a veil-like quality above the deck. Ipe wood contributes natural warmth in the handrail as well as in the lookout decking and seating. Natural stone is used to frame and visually anchor the landings. An understated lighting scheme utilizes LED fixtures in the handrail and below-deck accent lighting to illuminate the V-frames on both sides, providing pleasing reflections in the water by night.
