The Dundas St. West Parkettes set a precedent for other BIAs to seize opportunities for maximizing their public realm; to implement parkettes as an integrated unifying element in their streescape revitalization. The project is locally significant as it brings high use to otherwise useless, neglected spaces while adding tree canopy, lush groundcover planting, and seating areas. The design intent was to provide occupiable spaces and pedestrian “pauses” within an existing urban environment that was historically just a vehicular thoroughfare for local residents and consumers.
Along with the overall streetscape revitalization, the parkettes have become a motivator of change in the neighbourhood with increases in leasable spaces, restaurants and boutique-businesses. Completed in 2011, the parkettes appear as though they have always been a part of the Dundas Street West community.
