In memoriam: Lillian Iris Chanasyk
Lillian Iris Chanasyk passed away on May 12, 2022 just shy of her 93 birthday. She is the wife of Victor Chanasyk who was the Founding Director of the first School of Landscape of Architecture in Canada at the University of Guelph. She self identified as a “homemaker” which is an old fashioned term, but she felt her role was to love and support her husband and his career. She did that very well. She was also an independent woman in her own right. Intelligent, thoughtful, and caring. She will be missed by many students and colleagues who knew her through the School and many trips out to Victor’s farm where they learned about landscapes and ecology and who enjoyed her wonderful baked beans cooked over an open fire. A life well lived indeed.

He worked with André Lafontaine, Walz Lapinz, Warner Goshom, Lise Cormier, Mr. Hamel, his good friend Ulric Couture and many other colleagues on the development of City parks (Square Victoria), Old Montreal (Cour Le Royer), the Mount Royal Belvedere, and as a consultant for the Parc des Iles (La Ronde) after his retirement from the City. Celebrating Canada’s Garden Culture Roots – Creating a Legacy
2022 being the Canada’s Year of the Garden, we thought it would be appropriate to identify 100 ‘Garden Moments of Canada’ that have contributed to the development of Canada’s garden culture, the ornamental horticulture sector and the country.
These 100 Garden Moments of Canada will be the base for setting up Canada’s Garden Hall of Fame, an important educational legacy of the Year of the Garden 2022.
