The rehabilitation concept proposed by the landscape architect focuses on restoring the original natural landscape of the Lairet River, a site where Jacques-Cartier and his crew spent the winter of 1535-1536. This restoration program led to the replacement of a damaged storm water collector by a meandering river ecosystem.
The restored river landscape is coherent with the heritage site status of the park, providing improved opportunities for enhancing the commemorative components of the project, including an artwork inspired by a deconstructed rendering of La Grande Hermine.
The project is a demonstration in sustainable landscape redevelopment integrating both cultural and environmental concerns: enhancement of a historic riverfront feature, bioengineering solutions to runoff management and site rehabilitation, improved linkages with the neighbouring community, all to create an attractive visitor destination or national significance.
