CSLA Members Practice Assessment on Mitigation and Adaptation to a Changing Climate

Help the CSLA Committee on Climate Adaptation better understand the issues affecting landscape architects across the country and identify gaps in research and resources by taking this short survey.

This survey is intended to gather information from working landscape architects about your current understanding of climate change adaptation, and your interest in continuing professional development on this topic.

The Survey should take only about ten minutes of your time to complete.

Personal information, and information that could identify respondents has been deliberately excluded. We look forward to hearing from you.

Deadline: December 7, 2022

The CSLA Is Calling for Researchers for a Report on the Value of Landscape Architecture in Canada

One of the primary responsibilities of the CSLA is advocacy on behalf of its membership to the public and private sector, promoting the value of professional design expertise and to communicate the social, economic, and environmental contributions that landscape architects bring to an ever-modernizing community. Bringing together data about our services and community design precedents from across the country forms an essential part of key messaging to a broader audience of our far-reaching contributions to contemporary city building and rural agendas.

The CSLA seeks to tell the narrative of the full scope of work influenced by landscape architects in Canada, and to bring the economic impacts and environmental, political, and social benefits to the forefront in quantifiable and qualitative terms. The information gathered in this study will not only form an update of our national breadth of our membership but will provide key messaging, critical data and highlight professional influence to be used in government relations, public promotion, and media background, as well as political engagement. In addition, the study will support an ongoing dialogue of the economic, cultural, and environmental benefits of our services in the public realm and broader environment forming an anchor of professional panel debates, political submissions and literary presentations going forward for the CSLA. Most importantly, highlighting the importance of investment in our creative and integrative design services within the public realm is essential for growth of our membership’s influence in the communities of tomorrow.

BC Attorney-General Response to the BCSLA Application

The BC Society of Landscape Architects is in a receipt of a letter dated October 24, 2022 from the Honourable Murray Rankin, KC, Attorney General and Minister Responsible for Housing.   He has concluded that the designation of landscape architecture is in the public interest, and that he will be making this recommendation to the Lieutenant-Governor-in-Council in due course.   It is his expectation that the BCSLA will work with the Office of the Superintendent of Professional Governance (OSPG) to begin the process to prepare for the transition to the Professional Governance Act (PGA) before seeking formal designation.  Read the letter here.

The BCSLA Executive, the PGA Working Group (PGA-WG) and staff are in touch with the OSPG to discuss next steps, and we will continue to keep you up to date on further developments.

giving tuesdayOn #GivingTuesday, you can make a lasting impact on the profession

This GivingTuesday, we're proud to be participating in a global day of giving!

Our mission at LACF is to invest in research, communication and scholarship that advances our collective capacity to shape resilient, equitable and meaningful landscapes for all.

GivingTuesday is a great way to further that mission because your donations will directly support our efforts.

With your support, LACF:

  • Invests up to $50,000 annually in grants and special projects for research and communication initiatives that promote and advance the values of the profession of landscape architecture;
  • Communicates the results of our professional and scholarly work widely,
  • Awards over $15,000 annually in scholarships to LA students in accredited programs across Canada because these exceptional people will be the future leaders in the profession and beyond.

LACF funds ground-breaking and evidence-based research and communication on topics consistent with the values at the forefront of the profession through its Annual Grants Program.

An example of some of the great work being funded by LACF is the landED Green Guide: The How-to Manual for Schoolyard Sustainability. The purpose of the landED Green Guide is to provide a landscape sustainability document that supports Canadian schools in understanding and maintaining their outdoor learning space. Their aim is to take the traditional landscape handover document and reframe it for accessible, long-term school use.

On this special day, we're asking for your help to support our grant recipients.

Please consider making a donation to the LACF. Every little bit helps and we are so grateful for your support this #GivingTuesdayCA!
