LGBT Purge Fund announces winning proposal for the LGBTQ2+ National Monument: “Thunderhead''

The design was conceived by the Winnipeg-based team led by Liz Wreford, Peter Sampson and Taylor LaRocque of Public City, with artists Shawna Dempsey and Lorri Millan, and Indigenous and Two-Spirited People subject-matter expert and advisor, Albert McLeod.

The design draws on the symbolism of a thunderhead cloud, which embodies the strength, activism and hope of LGBTQ2+ communities. It will be a lasting testimony to the courage and humanity of those who were harmed by the LGBT Purge, homophobic and transphobic laws and norms, and Canada’s colonial history.

Clive Justice Celebration of Life

As most of you know, due to COVID restrictions, the family of Clive Justice was unable to hold an in-person event following his death in December 2020. There have been a few cancellations of planned services in the meantime, including the one scheduled for March 19th.

Please be advised that a celebration of Clive’s life is now planned for SATURDAY, JUNE 18, 2022, to be held at 1:00 PM at the Unitarian Church of Vancouver, 949 West 49th Avenue (at Oak Street), Vancouver, BC. We believe, with the continued loosening of various restrictions (and hopefully the absence of another variant of concern between now and then), that we will be able to hold this event as originally envisioned, and hope that you will be able to join us.

It would be much appreciated if you would please contact karenjustice@shaw.ca to RSVP yea or nay regarding your intention to attend.

Tell us about your Health/Health Equity work that may also Address Climate Change

With funding from the McConnell Foundation, the Canadian Public Health Association (CPHA), the Canadian Health Association for Sustainability & Equity (CHASE), and the Ontario Public Health Association (OPHA) are collaborating to support climate action (investments, policies and programs) at the local level focused on achieving a net-zero carbon economy by mid-century.

We want to showcase the work already being done by public health. Let us know if you are involved in the development or implementation of a policy or program that addresses health and/or health equity that may also reduce climate emissions.

For example, projects that have:

  • Made communities more walkable, bikeable, transit-supportive, or accessible to all
  • Increased tree canopy, greenspace or parks in communities, particularly in underserved neighbourhoods
  • Increased investments in public transit or active transportation infrastructure, particularly in underserved neighbourhoods
  • Supported building standards for new buildings, encouraged renewable energy, improved energy efficiency of existing buildings, improved indoor environments for the protection of health, or decreased energy poverty or
  • Promoted plant-based diets, the protection of agricultural lands, urban agriculture,  sustainable agriculture, or food security.

If there’s a good fit with our overall project, we will schedule a 30-minute interview. We plan to share these stories with others in public health through case study reports, webinars and blogs.

If you have a story to tell, please contact Kim Perrotta at kim@chasecanada.org.
