Mr Gibbs obtained a B.E.S. degree in 1973 and a M.L.A. degree in 1979, both from the University of Manitoba. He became a member of AALA and CSLA in 1980 and his leadership and organizational talents catapulted the AALA from a disorganized group into a business-like and influential association. Aside from his unflagging support and involvement with numerous AALA committees, he served as AALA Treasurer from 1983-85 and as MLA President from 1986-87, followed by a term on the CSLA Board of Governors.
A major accomplishment was his exemplary leadership as Chair of the most successful CSLA Congress '97 in Edmonton. He served on the Editorial Board of the new CSLA journal LANDSCAPES/PAYSAGES and on Edmonton's Urban Design Review Panel.
