Mr. Jim Vafiades graduated from the Landscape Architectural program at Ryerson University in 1979. He was accepted as a full member of the OALA in 1985. Jim was instrumental in organizing the OALA Southwestern Chapter located in London, Ontario and was the chair of the organizing committee for the OALA’s Annual General meeting and 30th Anniversary Conference in 1998 which took place in London, Ontario. He joined the OALA as a councilor in 2000 and served as President from 2002 to 2004 where he provided guidance and leadership during the alternative membership debates and assisted in developing the OALA Business Guide. As Past President he joined the CSLA Board of Directories and served for three years where he was co-chair of the CSLA Cuba Congress that was held in Havana, Cuba in 2007 and more recently as co-chair for the 75th anniversary conference.
Since his appointment to the OALA in 1985 Jim has been a partner and owner of a number of private practice companies known today as Vafiades Landscape Architect, an award winning and highly successful landscape architecture practice. Currently Jim is an Associate and respected member of the landscape architecture team in the Toronto office of Stantec Consulting Ltd. where he manages and coordinates the design and implementation of a wide variety of projects.
He excels in the field of urban design and has extensive knowledge in the development of master plans, streetscape design, community plans and municipal parks, with a special interest in downtown intensification and New Urbanism principles.
