Patrick Mooney holds a Bachelor of Music degree (UBC, 1971), a Masters of Landscape Architecture (University of Guelph, 1981) and a Ph.D. (University of Michigan, 2008). Patrick’s career has integrated practice and service with teaching and research. He has twice chaired the UBC Landscape Architecture Program, is a Past-President and Fellow of The Council of Educators in Landscape Architecture and has served as Vice President of the Canadian Society of Landscape Ecology and Management, a member of the CSLA Accreditation Committee, and a director and committee chair of the BCSLA.
His pro bono ecological restoration projects have received CSLA and ASLA professional awards and he has been recognized with service awards from municipalities, schools, the BCSLA and the Vancouver Natural History Society and the BC Wild Bird Trust. His work with Don Vaughan and Shunmyo Masuno on the Restoration of Nitobe Memorial Garden at UBC was a career highlight and recieved a CSLA National Merit Award.
Patrick began his teaching career at the Kansas State University in 1984, moving to the University of British Columbia, 1986. His responsibilities include teaching design studios, landscape planning and management, planting design and regional ecology and graduate advising in Forestry, Interdiciplinary Studies, Resource Management, Architecture and Landscape Architecture. His research, practice and publications focus ecosystem services, the therapeutic benefits of landscape and ecological restoration for wildlife habitat. Patrick advocates broadly for conservation management, working with government, developers and non-profit environmental groups to acquire and manage conservation areas to maintain regional biological diversity and ecosystem services.
