Dominion Bridge wanted to create a new mixed, dense and sustainable living environment. Located at the mouth of the Lachine Canal, this 12 ha site runs along the north shore of the Canal. Surrounded by industrial land, most of which is not being used, the project will recuperate a precious shoreline to develop an eco-neighbourhood that will act as catalyst for the revitalization of the whole sector.
Designed as a continuation of the surrounding urban fabric, the project will help stimulate the sector's densification and diversification. Close to 1,900 housing units, 12,000 m2 of commercial space and 25,000 m2 of public areas and recreational facilities are planned around broad landscaped spaces. This welcoming and safe environment will encourage the settlement of families with children.
The proposed landscaping will underscore the great moments of the area’s history by highlighting traces from the past. Although many components of the industrial heritage will be maintained, the asset strategy will also be expressed by the land use and planning of the new neighborhood’s public spaces. The large central place, shared streets, public spaces, walkways and bicycle paths will help reconnect urban life to the too-long-forgotten shores of the Lachine Canal.
