George Tanaka

George Tanaka (1912-1982) was a highly-respected Canadian landscape architect. He established his landscape architectural practice in Ontario in 1955, served the OALA as vice-president from 1967-70, won two CSLA Design Awards in 1969, served the CSLA as Secretary and member of the Board of Governors from 1972-74, and was elected a Fellow of the CSLA in 1975. Tanaka also worked hard for restoration of the civil rights denied people of Japanese ancestry in Canada under the Was Measures Act of 1942. He participated in the formation of the Japanese Canadian Committee for Democracy in 1944, and served as its chairman in 1946. He was Executive Secretary of the National Japanese Canadian Citizens Association from 1947-53, and a founding member of the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre in 1963.

To commemorate the 25th anniversary of its founding in 1963, the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre in Don Mills. Ontario is honouring the memory of distinguished Japanese Canadian by establishing the $50,000 George Tanaka Scholarship Fund.
