Scatliff+Miller+Murray was hired to create a new vision for the downtown waterfront that would stimulate new commercial, office and residential development. With the removal of a rail line that historically separated the Red River from the city, SMM was able to optimize the development potential of the lands and the recreational potential of the river corridor. Waterfront plazas, interpretive kiosks, furnishings and sculpture work together to bring the waterfront’s history to life all within a few minutes walking distance of Portage and Main.
As part of the project, SMM completed a management plan for the Historic Exchange District and architectural guidelines for new area development. Millions of dollars in development has since occurred in the area on land previously unavailable and unattractive to the development community, bringing a renewed interest and vigor to downtown Winnipeg and fulfilling the original vision for this infrastructure investment.
