The Brignon-dit-Lapierre house is located on Gouin Blvd. in Montreal, near the Des Prairies River, in the borough of Montréal-Nord. It is an old farmhouse built in the 18thand 19th centuries, since converted into a cultural centre. In 2018, Vlan paysages submitted a design proposal for the former farmland surrounding the house. The primary objective was to offer residents a public space that would respect the building’s historic character. The proposed project is characterized by a gentle, detail-oriented, interpretive approach to a heritage agricultural landscape that has been erased by the passage of time. The approach entails adding, enhancing, transforming and removing existing site elements in order to make the vanished landscape reappear. In that sense, the design proposal was restrained yet powerful, presenting the landscape architect as a professional who is sensitive to a landscape that needs several forms of care in order to be restored. In addition, the regenerated landscape leads to an ecological rehabilitation of the site using native and heirloom species consistent with the site’s historical vocation. Lastly, the proposal involves the creation of a primary physical connection between Gouin Blvd. And Parc de la Rivière-des-Prairies, in the borough of Montréal-Nord. It is accessible to all.
